MONOPOLY iPhone App Review

by March 6, 2010

monopolyMonopoly has made it’s way to the smartphone.  All of the great features that made the board game famous are now all available to you with the tap of your finger.  You can ride the railroads, stop in Illinois Avenue or take a walk down to Park Place.  If you aren’t careful you might even end up in jail!  Monopoly offers some great features for an iPhone app and can provide you with opportunities to increase your wealth and your property.  Play against real or computer players and see how your rolling skills compare.  Learn how to gauge your cash flow and your properties to maximize profits.

Monopoly allows you to buy and sell some of the most popular properties in the world.  You can own Kentucky Ave, or Boardwalk, and charge the other players for landing on your cards.  Pick your character (shoe, boat, dog, hat, steamboat, and more) and traverse around the board, picking up properties as you go.  This app offers some interactive props and animated turns.

To play, all you need to do is shake your phone to shake the dice.   Whatever number shows up is the number of spaces you advance on the board.  If you would like to look at the properties you purchased, simply tap on the screen.  You can improve the value of your property by purchasing houses and ultimately hotels on your property.  There are also some interactive features you can land when moving around the board such as “chance”, or “community chest”.  Some of these will be money bonuses, while other will be payments that you will have to make to other players.

Features:

  • Variety of different character pieces to choose from (dog, horse, steamboat, hat, car, and more)
  • Manage and sell famous properties like Boardwalk and Park Place
  • 3 different difficulty levels
  • Ability to build houses and hotels on property to increase their value
  • Add some unpredictability with the “chance” and “community chest” spaces
  • Can customize house rules and save games to play later
  • Can play with 2 players using bluetooth technology

Overall:

A classic remake of a classic game.  The beauty of this version of the popular board game is that you don’t have to worry about your idiot friend taking forever to make a decision, especially if you are playing computer players.  If you are willing to wait on other people then you can play online and test your deal making skills on other experienced players.  A fun way to pass the time, and gives you the virtual satisfaction of being more well off than someone else.  And virtual wealth is as good as any right?

Voted 3 1/2 stars by iPhone app users and costs around $4.99.
