Retro Defense Android app Review

by March 27, 2010

retro-defense-wave-3Tower Defense games are a dime a dozen now on the mobile market.  In order to create a really successful one you have to differentiate somehow.  The Retro Defense Android app has done just that and has made a quality tower defense game by using a retro theme that every gamer can relate to.  The graphics have neon color graphics and they glow and emanate just like an old eighties dance club.  You will love the simplicity of the game and the smooth animations and gameplay that are included.

The point of the Retro Defense Android app is to build a variety of towers and stop the enemies from reaching the other side of the map.  There are over 15 different levels that you will have to complete by building your towers to stop the oncoming invaders.  You will have a variety of 10 different towers that you can build and upgrade that will each have unique abilities to stop certain types of enemies.  There are also six different invaders that will head your way so you will have to use an assortment of these towers to be able to stop them all.  As you play and earn points you can also unlock three different bonus towers to help you be even more effective.  Add a retro soundtrack collection on top of that and you have got yourself a quality game.

The best part about this game is that it is legitimately challenging.   You will work hard to top your high scores and complete maps without letting any invaders getting by.  Although this game may seem a little pricey, it brings enough to the table to make it worth it.

Features:

  • Retro theme and soundtrack
  • 15 different levels
  • 10 different tower types
  • 6 different enemies
  • 3 bonus towers to unlock

Overall:

This is a cool spin on the Tower Defense genre.  It has a variety of different towers, enemies, and upgrades.  The retro music and retro theme are a fun way to spice up the game and make it different than other games out there.  The only problem with this app is that you can’t help but wonder how much better the game would have been if it had kept the retro theme but improved the graphics a bit.  Not only that, it is a little expensive compared to other tower defense apps out there.  To its defense, however, it is one of the more challenging tower defense apps out there and will give you something to work for as you play it all the way through.

Voted 4 out of 5 stars by Android app users and costs $4.99 to download.
